Postpartum Hemorrhage

Reducing a top-three cause of maternal mortality.

PPH is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in the U.S. In most cases, the clinical team underestimates the amount of blood loss during the delivery process. When corrective action isn’t taken quickly enough, it can lead to severe — sometimes fatal — complications.

InSytu worked with OB leadership at a top urban quaternary hospital to plan a simulation program that ultimately involved more than 600 physicians, nurses, lab, pharmacy, and ancillary team members.

Comparing pre- and post-simulation data revealed dramatic improvements in reducing ICU stays, transfusions, and unplanned hysterectomies. Year one cost savings were estimated at $840,000, while year two savings were in excess of $500,000.

Estimated blood loss of ≥ 1000cc Vaginal Delivery and ≥ 1500cc Cesarean Section
